Hey... What the fuck is an attunement?

ATTUNEMENT 101ENERGY WORK

Okay, so you're about to receive your first attunement. Somewhere along the way someone has already told you to drink plenty of water, expect twenty-one days of clearing, not be alarmed if you cry, maybe avoid crowds for a bit, and above all, trust the process.

Twenty-one days of clearing. Of what, exactly?

Nobody says. Most of what gets written for beginners works like that - plenty about what you should expect, almost nothing about what's going on. Some of it is harmless. Some of it is folklore, copied from manual to manual until nobody remembers who said it first.

You might think the flood of questions, doubts and "wait, does this even make sense?" moments, with a sprinkle of skepticism on top, belongs exclusively to newbies. That once you've been on the so-called spiritual path long enough, you graduate into some serene, question-free enlightenment cloud. I've done my fair share of wandering through spiritual landscape, and some questions still follow me around. It's almost funny, because for most of them I've found answers - or at least information. Most of it is two clicks away. I could type the words into any search engine, head over to Reiki Rays, or consult some energy-work encyclopedia-meets-dictionary hybrid. And yet those explanations rarely satisfy me. Call me picky. Tell me to abandon my logical mind, my "3D thinking." Cezary has written seven posts in this series. Good posts. Long posts. None of them starts at the start, so this one will. But hey...

What the fuck is an attunement?

First, where it came from.

Reiki starts with Mikao Usui in Japan, 1922. Hawayo Takata brought it to Hawaii and, near the end of her life, trained the handful of teachers who carried it West in the 1970s. For decades the symbols were secret and the training cost thousands of dollars. In 1995 Diane Stein printed them in a book. Around 2000 the internet took the hand-over out of the room - sender in one country, receiver in another, sometimes not even awake at the same hour. Since then: thousands of systems. For your liver, your cat, your bank account. Yes, we sell those too. That's the shelf you're looking at, and if it makes you a little dizzy, that's a reasonable reaction.

The variety is a blessing and a curse. I honestly don't know how I'd choose if I were starting out today - maybe that's why "listen to your intuition" gets said so often. At first you go for whatever matches your interests: crystals, ancient Egypt, angels, flowers, animals. There's an attunement for pretty much anything, and if it isn't here, Etsy has a stranger one waiting for you. Then comes the department of problem-solving and superpower-gaining attunements - excuse me, I meant personal development and empowerments...

One translation note. You'll hear "frequency" and "vibration" constantly in this world. In physics those are measurements. Here they describe what something feels like from the inside. Read them that way and they stop being a problem.

Let's strip it down

Receiving an attunement means making yourself responsive to a specific energy frequency, and letting that frequency harmonize with your own energetic setup - your subtle bodies and so on. In plainer words: an attunement is a one-time event that connects you to a specific energy system, so that afterwards you can work with that energy on your own. The system is a pattern someone named, set conditions for, and wrote down in a manual: how you enter it, how you use it, and usually what it's for.

Now a picture that makes it easier to hold. Almost everywhere you look, attunements get compared to tuning a radio. I'd skip that one, because it turns you into a passive box waiting for a signal. "Attune" was a music word first, meaning to bring into tune, so think of being taught a song instead.

Someone who wrote the song, or knows it well, passes it to you once. Maybe they sing it to you live. Maybe they leave a recording for when you're ready. Maybe you work it out yourself from the sheet music. After that, it's yours. You can hum it whenever you like, which is what manuals call activation. It sounds slightly different in your voice than in anyone else's. It gets truer the more you sing it and fades if you never do. You can teach it to someone else, and you can stop singing it. Whether you can ever completely forget it is a question I used to answer confidently. I don't anymore.

Here's how I understand it.

Take the experience of a dream coming true. It carries specific feelings - the electric tingle of possibility, the warmth of hope, that peculiar lightness in your chest when you know something is happening. Add belief itself: the stubborn conviction that your dream can happen. Put all of that together - the feelings, the sensations, the mindset - and you get a distinct energetic frequency.
The frequency of dreams becoming reality.

Maybe you've never really known that frequency. Or, more likely - and yes, this stings - you forgot it. Once upon a time you believed in your own dreams with the certainty of a kid on Christmas Eve. Then life happened. Disappointment hit. People laughed. Doors closed. Things didn't work out the way they were "supposed" to. And now?

Static. No signal. (Yes, the radio snuck back in. Some things are hard to retire.)

Back to attunements.

You can receive a transmission of that state - dreams becoming reality - and feel it again. Your system remembers. You become responsive to it. You start to harmonize with it. You don't wake up the next day with magical abilities or special powers (sorry to disappoint the fantasy novel enthusiasts). What you get is the felt memory of that state. You will remember how it feels. And remembering is half the battle. When you remember, you can move toward your dream again. You can believe it's possible again. You can do something about it.

That's the main premise of attunements. So think of them as energy tools, because that's what they are. Tools. An attunement shouldn't promise to do the work for you, and you shouldn't approach it like it will. Receiving an attunement and expecting instant results is like buying a gym membership and wondering why you're not ripped yet. The membership gives you access. You still have to show up and lift.

Music of your soul

Attunements are recalibration points. Checkpoints. Anchors. They help you build something here, in the alleged real world, not only in your imagination.

Think of it this way. Your energy has a sound, a rhythm. In Polish we ask co ci w duszy gra? - literally, what's playing in your soul? Hence why we say we resonate with something. In the ideal version, you resonate with a healthy pattern. In the common version, life's chaos rattles you. Trauma tightens certain strings. Fear mutes others. An attunement is like a master musician coming in and retuning you to a specific key - sometimes a new one, more often an old one you forgot, or one you never quite managed to hold.

Here's the kicker, and this is where people trip up: you have to keep playing. The tuning doesn't maintain itself. The master musician's job is not to hover over you forever like an energetic babysitter, making sure your frequency never wobbles. The point is for you to become the musician. You maintain the tuning - through practice, through intention, through using what you've been attuned to.

Fireworks are optional

Your friend describes golden light pouring through the top of her head. You got mild warmth and a nap. So yours failed?

No. People differ a lot, and stably, in how deep they get pulled into inner experience. Psychologists call it absorption and have measured it since the seventies (Tellegen & Atkinson, 1974). If you get lost in music, cry at exactly the right chord, can walk through a remembered room down to the chairs, you probably score high on it and will likely feel things straight away, in full color. Lower, and you might feel almost nothing for months, until one week something is just different.

How much you feel tells you about your wiring. It tells you nothing about whether the hand-over took. Some people cry at insurance commercials. The commercial aired either way. Beginners get sold fireworks and then think they failed when none go off. And if anyone tells you that you felt nothing because you're blocked - that's bullshit. Usually it comes right before an offer to unblock you, for a fee.

Feeling your body from the inside is also a skill. It has a name, interoception, and it trains like any other sense. Think of the person who can hear from two rooms away that the washing machine is unbalanced. Nobody is born with that. They learned it.

So: fireworks are optional. Also entirely possible.

Integration: the part nobody puts on Instagram

After your attunement comes the least glamorous phase: integration. This is when the frequency starts rewiring things. It might show you how and why you disconnected from it in the first place. Spoiler: that part is rarely pretty.

Maybe believing in your dreams became painful when they were mocked or crushed one too many times. Maybe stepping into your power once made someone in your life feel threatened, so you shrank to keep the peace. The attunement can bring the frequency back into your system. It does not resolve the reasons you shut it down. That work is yours. Boring, human work.

This is usually where people ghost the process. They feel a shift. Old pain or discomfort surfaces. They get confused. Maybe cranky. Maybe tired. And instead of staying with it, they bail. No integration. No practice. No reflection. Just:

"Meh, guess it didn't work."

It did work.

You didn't.

(One exception, and I mean it: tired or emotional for a day or two is normal. Anything physical that worries you, or doesn't pass, is a question for a doctor - not for integration, and not for me.)

Moment of honesty

Nobody can show you how an attunement works. Not me, not Cezary, not whoever has the longest title in any shop. Anyone who says they can is selling you a certainty this field doesn't have.

Here's what can be said, layer by layer.

What you'll do: settle, pay attention, set an intention, let it run.
What you might notice: heat, tingling, pressure, emotion with no story attached, images, a heavy pull toward sleep. Or very little.
What the traditions say: a life force moves through you, you're a channel for it, and each system is its own flavor of it.
What research can see: attention changes sensation. Sitting still with a purpose switches on the body's relaxation response. Expectation, and the warmth between giver and receiver, change outcomes enough to measure - in one well-known trial, the same fake treatment delivered warmly beat the same fake treatment delivered briskly, by a lot.

Trials comparing real Reiki with pretend Reiki have mostly found no difference. And nobody has ever measured anything passing between two people, least of all at a distance.

There. I said it on our own website.

Everything we do here stands on the layer nobody can see, and you should know where the floor is before you put your weight on it. Where do I stand? I'm someone who needs to know how things work, and here I don't. Some days I'm sure something is going on. Some days I'm not. I practice on both kinds of days.

Attunements are not spiritual band-aids

There's a tendency in spiritual circles to treat attunements like cosmic quick fixes. Got trauma? Here's an attunement. Can't manifest? Here's an attunement. Existential crisis? You guessed it. Stop it. An attunement is not a bypass. It's not a shortcut around your emotional, psychological or spiritual growing pains. It's a catalyst. A boost. An energetic permission slip that says, "You're allowed to access this state again."

What it doesn't do: process your childhood, fix your relationship patterns, or replace professional help where you need it. And it definitely doesn't get you a free pass out of physical reality. You still have to do normal human things: make decisions, set boundaries, send emails, show up on time, act.

Want your dream to become reality? An attunement can help you remember what believing feels like. You still have to decide on the dream (not just "abundance" in the abstract), make a plan, take the steps, and keep showing up when it's neither mystical nor exciting. Energy work supports action. It doesn't replace it. You're the main character in this story. The attunement is just really good background music.

Who should wait

Attunements aren't for everyone. Not right now, anyway, and they shouldn't be.

If you're in acute crisis, this isn't the week. If you'd be using an attunement in place of care you need, it's the wrong tool, and I'd rather lose the sale than pretend otherwise.

If you have a history of psychosis, or of losing your footing in what's real, go slowly and don't go alone. Inward practices can shake people loose - it's documented for meditation, and I see no reason this would be the exception.

And if you need certainty to function, know what you're walking into. This practice runs on doubt from the first hour, and it will never hand you a receipt.

None of this is a closed door. It'll all still be here.

Tell someone. I mean it.

For most of human history an initiation had three parts. You left something behind. You crossed a threshold. Then you came back to people who knew where you'd been, and that welcome was half the point.

Online hand-overs kept the first two and dropped the third. You buy a file, receive it alone with your eyes closed, and the next morning nobody on earth knows anything happened to you. Plenty of people new to this don't belong to any community at all. So let me ask you. You'd tell someone you got a tattoo. You'd tell someone you passed your driving test. You just did something people used to do in front of a whole village, and you're keeping it to yourself because it feels weird as hell to say out loud?

Say it anyway. Tell one person, even one who thinks it's nonsense - skeptics make good witnesses, they pay attention. Write down one line about what it did that first week; that's a witness too, just a future one. Book a real time session if you want an awake human on the other end while you receive. And after your first one, send me a single line about what it did, at anna@effexora.com. Not a review. One line. I read every one.

This is also why free attunements so often fizzle, and it has nothing to do with strength. A gift creates a bond because there's a giver in it. A free file with nobody behind it weighs nothing, so it gets put down and forgotten, like most free things. If you take a free one - and I hope you do - give it some weight. The full hour. The line. The person you tell.

So, do attunements do anything?

Yes - when you use them as what they are. Attunements, empowerments, activations: they're tools for alignment and remembering. They help you tune back into states, qualities and capacities that have been offline, numbed out, or never fully switched on.

They work best when you:

  • bring realistic expectations

  • commit to integration

  • pair energy work with physical action

  • stay curious and honest about your patterns

  • remember that you are the one doing the transforming

And for the love of all that is sacred and slightly sarcastic, stop collecting attunements like spiritual Pokémon and then wondering why your life looks exactly the same.

Energy work is still work.

The attunement just makes it a hell of a lot easier to remember that you were never powerless to begin with.
