Attunement 101: Self-Attunement

The first method I wrote about waits inside a sphere until you call it. The second sits behind a booking calendar. The third arrives as a file, and there is nobody on the other side of it. No sender preparing anything, no one awake at an agreed minute, no one who will ever know you opened it. You read, you do what the pages say, and something happens or it doesn't.

Two days ago I released J0Y, my second free self-attunement in two years, and it left me with more to say about the method than a manual has room for. So this is the third post on how attunements reach people, after the chi ball and the real time method, and it is the one where the method and the making can't be pulled apart. A chi ball and a shared hour are two ways of handing over something that was built to be handed over. A self-attunement is built differently from the first page, and the building is what decides how it arrives.

Almost every free attunement you will ever find is a self-attunement, and almost every self-attunement you will ever find is free. Those two words have shared a shelf so long that the field reads them as one word. Ask what a self-attunement is and you'll be told it's the free kind. Ask what a free attunement is and you'll be told it's the kind you give yourself.

Both answers describe what exists, but anyway, it's more complicated than that.

Receiving One

Read the manual. It sounds too obvious to print and it is the step most often skipped, because a self-attunement looks like something you can go straight to the last page of. The reception is small and the manual is large for a reason. The manual is most of the attunement. A sentence said with nothing behind it opens onto nothing.

Most self-attunements are entered by a spoken intention, a sentence you say aloud or in your mind, naming the system and the founder and asking to receive. A few are entered through an image. A symbol you rest your eyes on until thinking settles, a picture taken in through the edges of your vision, an animation you watch until your eyes tire. A few ask you to do something, name a thing, draw a thing, go somewhere, make a sound you don't make in ordinary life. And one or two are entered by arriving at a state, where you practise until it comes and the state itself is the door. Outside the spoken sentence all of this is rare, and the manual will tell you which one you're holding.

With a chi ball your intent opens an exchange somebody else prepared.

In real time somebody else opens it and your job is to be there.

Here there is nobody. The manual has no sensors. Nothing confirms that you began or that you finished, and the doubt that visits every reception, is anything even happening, visits this one louder, because there is no second person whose presence you could lean on for an answer. You have to let it pass through without help. That is the first thing this method teaches, and it teaches it whether you wanted the lesson or not.

The energy behaves differently, not necessarily weaker, it just feels more spacious. With a transmitted attunement there is a direction to it. Something arrives, from somewhere, and you can feel the somewhere. A self-attunement has no direction. It is already around you when you open the file, at your temperature, and receiving it is closer to noticing than to being given. People who expect the arrival feel nothing and conclude it was weak. It wasn't weak. There was nothing to arrive. It still needs to be directed, shaped, structured, the way every attunement does, because that is what makes them attunements. The shaping just happened somewhere you weren't.

There are two traps I can name, because I've been in both.

The first is the repeat. A great many self-attunements end with a sentence that says you may re-attune as often and as many times as you like, and it reads as generosity, and it is meant that way. But nothing happened is not a reason to do it again, and it didn't finish is not a reason to do it again, and both of them are reasons to read the manual again. Repeat as an experiment, with notes, weeks apart, or don't repeat. A second try to fix a first try is how you turn an attunement into a habit you never examine.

The second trap is quieter. Nothing is owed. Nobody is waiting for you. No exchange passed between two people, so nothing in you registers a debt, and an unobliged thing is the easiest thing in the world to set down. I have received a lot of free self-attunements. Most of them were actually just nothing in particular. An evening, a sentence, some warmth, then nothing, because nothing in them asked anything of me, and I put them down and never went back. That is a bad result for the format and I'm not going to smooth it over. It is also very telling. It is the format doing exactly what its conditions say. Everything that makes it trustworthy is the same thing that makes it easy to put down.

One from years ago stayed with me, and it's worth describing, because it shows what the difference is.

Gaia's Blue Lotus Overlighting Deva, a free self-attunement by Eileen Brooks. Her systems came out of her paintings. She painted first and the attunements followed. The manual hands you no clean instruction. It moves through the lotus in Buddhism, in Egypt, in the chakras, as a flower essence, as a devic presence, in a voice full of ellipses and asterisks that keeps trailing off mid-thought, and the way in is a painting you look at until something keys. First time through you get a slice. Maybe a slice is all you get for a while. And it's lovely. Creative, honest, made by somebody who was following something instead of filling in a form, and the strangeness is the best thing about it. I still recommend it.

What it has that the rest didn't is simple to say and hard to make. Somebody decided things. You can feel a person choosing this over that on every page. And there is enough in it to come back to, which is the only test that matters with a format where nobody will ever make you come back.

The Door I Borrowed

My first self-attunement came out in September 2024. Zodiacal Spirit Bracelet, free, dedicated to a teacher whose own free self-attunements I had received and admired. Its reception page was the field's and I didn't notice at the time. Not in spirit. In shape. The energies are already set in the ethereal realms, find a quiet space, state your intention, from the Eternal Sacred Source, as set by, I ask for the most perfect experience possible for me right now, thank you, let it flow for fifteen to thirty minutes, re-attune as often as you like. I had received that page a dozen times under other names. I put my own name in the slot and thought the attunement was mine.

It was. In every part except the door.

Then Anna's Come Free, July 2025, free, built around the plant that, as she tells it in the manual, closed a wound on the back of her own head when she was a baby and antibiotics hadn't. Its self-attunement is not a formula. It's a morning. You go to water at dawn, you touch your own body with something approaching acceptance, you gather energy up from the ground and scream it out over the river, and then you draw a symbol, your own, with a stick in sand or a finger in the air, and she writes that it does not have to be beautiful, it has to be yours. No template. No set phrase. The key gets made by the person receiving, on the spot, once, and it's the only free self-attunement on that whole shelf I have kept practising with over months. A month later came Stand Up For Yourself, paid, no fixed fee, she says forget the idea of downloading some external energy or connecting to a distant master, that's spiritual colonialism, taking someone else's power instead of claiming your own. The attunement in that manual is an act of naming. You name your guardian out loud and the naming is the attunement. And she refuses to be the master in the room with an image I still laugh at. If you were getting a puppy, would you want her to appear in your home and build the relationship herself while you stood there third-wheeling?

That route has almost no examples in this field. The receiver makes the key, as many keys as there are receivers, and the attunement gets authored twice, once by her and once by you at the water, with neither authorship finished without the other.

I found it brilliant and said so.

About three months after Stand Up For Yourself I released Ouroboros Solar Dragon, my first paid self-attunement. You rest your eyes on a symbol until thinking settles, and the manual tells you when it's done in one line, the seed is planted, the cycle recognized you, and everything after that is practice rather than reception. Front page says no one transmits this to anyone else, each person must eat their own tail. Self-Eternalized Dreamspinner followed, taken in through the edges of your vision, with an ending I still think is the best sentence I've written about reception. It completes when it completes, and you'll know because you'll stop wondering if it's done. Then Glitchy Flame, an animated file you look at past the polite amount of looking, with Anna's Cellf-Defense between them. I chose the format for those three because it fit what they are. A dragon that digests its own past. A spinner that spins for nobody. A flame that trips you on purpose. Not one of them could be handed over by another person without the manual becoming a liar.

And still, in all of mine, the key gets made at my desk. A formula, a symbol, an image, a name. The reader is handed the lock and the key together and asked to turn it. I have never let a receiver draw their own symbol. Two years of this. She has done it twice and I haven't done it once.

J0Y is the closest I've come, and it went the other way instead.

It opens like nothing else I've made. You say the name and it points at one thing that is standing in your way. Not a list, not a feeling, one thing. You look at whether that thing is inside you or outside you, and you put it where it belongs, and you go on with your day. You do that as often as you want, ten times in an afternoon or once a week, and nothing accumulates and nothing is lost by a gap. And then one day you say the name and it points at nothing. Empty is what you expect and empty is what you get. That is the reception. You receive J0Y then, once, and the door closes behind you and does not reopen.

Every other self-attunement I know of, mine included, says as often as you like. J0Y says once, and it took me most of the writing to understand why I needed it to. An attunement you can take ten times in one afternoon is not an event, and a thing that was never an event may never have been handed over at all. If nothing changes between the first reception and the tenth, what was the first one? A door that closes asks what an open door never asks. It makes the one reception count, because it can't be redone, which means you have to be there for it, and being there is the one thing this format otherwise never requires of anyone.

I built it that way to find out what it does to a free system.

I don't know yet.

Nobody Sends

An attunement is a set of conditions an energy takes shape in. A name, a manual, a symbol, a place in the body, a purpose, sometimes a rule about who may pass it on. One of those conditions, in nearly every system ever made, is a person. Someone who has it gives it to someone who doesn't. Everything this field built hangs off that single condition. Lineage is a record of it. Levels are a schedule for it. Certificates are receipts for it. The list of names at the back of a manual is its family tree.

A self-attunement is the same thing with that condition removed.

Nobody sends.

And still someone receives.

The field walks past this when it calls the method just intention, or going direct to source, as though taking the sender out left an empty room. Someone receives because someone came up with the idea that made reception possible. That is not sending. It is not nothing either. It is a different act, performed once, and it has no name here because the field only ever named the sending.

There is nothing mystical in the act. It's a run of decisions, each one closing off everything it isn't. Ouroboros is about metabolizing your own past, and somewhere in the writing it became obvious that a sender would make the manual a liar. You cannot eat somebody else's tail for them. A system that says so while arriving by transmission is arguing with itself. Decision, nobody transmits this. With J0Y I decided the opposite of the field at every point I could find one. No money. No repeat. Reception as a state you arrive at instead of an act you perform. Each of those took an afternoon of turning it over and five seconds to write down. That is the whole of the sending, and it happens once, before anyone exists to you, addressed to nobody in particular and received by whoever opens the file. Nothing on my side ever answers. The messages crossing in the same minute that I described in the real time post cannot happen here, because nobody is awake on the other side to cross with.

Whether I am the source of what I make, or only the place it took shape, drawing it from some universal web that connects everyone to everything, well, in my opinion that's a secondary concern, because it doesn't change the fact that I'm the one structuring it and deciding the final version. Which is why 'already set in the field,' the phrase that turns up across the whole shelf in one wording or another, is worth reading literally for once. It sounds like a discovery, as though the founder went looking and found the energy lying there. It's a decision. The founder set it, and a thing set by one decision can be set differently by another, which is how a self-attunement can be sold and a transmitted attunement can be free.

The field's own justification for the method goes further back than any of this. The man most of it descends from went up a mountain, went without food for twenty-one days, and something came down over his head. His memorial stone says so, and nobody attuned him. So, the argument goes, if he could do it, you can. In its extreme form you don't need a manual at all. You ask, in prayer or intention, to be attuned to any system that exists or any system you'd like to exist, for free, right now, and you are. I have seen it stated with a straight face and a made-up name for the resulting system.

That version deletes the author, and it deletes the one thing the method has. The mountain and the fast were a making, not a reception. He set them, held them, and what arrived took their shape. The conditions are the authorship. Take the author away and nothing is set, and what you receive when you attune yourself to anything with nothing set is your own expectation wearing the system's name. It will feel like reception. It will tell you what you already thought.

You never receive your own work. It's the strangest thing I know about being a founder and nobody warned me about it. By the time a manual is finished you have been inside the energy for weeks, shaping it, finding out what it refuses, and it isn't reception, because nobody hands it to you. The one attunement you can never receive is one you made. I have written systems I would have loved to meet the way a stranger meets them, opening the file with no idea what's inside, and that door is shut to me on everything I will ever build.

It's the only part of this work that has made me envy the reader.

What Is Being Valued

A transmitted attunement costs the founder a sending per person. Small, a chi ball takes minutes, and it never stops, because everyone who wants one needs a new one. A self-attunement's second copy costs nothing at all. The design is paid for once and the file does the delivering afterwards, for everyone, indefinitely, while the founder sleeps.

Put those two next to the word free and the shelf explains itself. Giving something away by chi ball means sending hundreds of them, unpaid, for years. Giving the same thing away as a self-attunement costs you the writing and nothing else. Free became self because free was cheap that way. Nobody decided it. The arithmetic decided it, and what the free shelf records is the price of a second copy.

There are teachers who refuse the arithmetic. They keep a free attunement on their site and transmit it, personally, to everyone who asks, for years, and I know some of them myself and really respect that kind of commitment. And I know what it does to a person. A free transmitted attunement is a small unpaid task that never ends, and one is fine, and two is fine, but ten of them on one website with their own streams of requests and you have agreed to sell your hours at zero for as long as the site stays up, and there is no moment when that becomes a problem, so nobody notices one, just a slow undervaluing of your own time and effort and the space it takes out of a day, until it turns into the other extreme, giving everything to something that doesn't let you pay the bills, and then a story arrives to make it make sense. This is my mission. This is what I'm for. I'll do it until I can't. Which is a savior complex with its work clothes on, and it can end in real illness, from years of giving without receiving.

Money is a necessary part of being alive. Not paying attention to having enough of it is a bad habit and a bad attitude toward yourself, and it is self-exploitation that this scene happens to reward. I have told myself that story about my own hours and it took me years to hear what it was.

That's the delivery side. The making has its own price and the field is much quieter about that one.

Open a free self-attunement about a stone. You will be told what the stone means. It will be what the stone meant in the last four manuals you opened, because all of them took it from the same handful of places, and those places took it from each other, and none of it has been checked against anything for twenty years. Amethyst calms and protects and helps with addiction. Rose quartz is love. The lotus rises out of the mud. True in the sense that everybody says it, which is the only sense in which most of it is true. Then a paragraph of chakra correspondence. Then the reception page, the same reception page, and a note that you may re-attune as often as you like.

I wrote pages like that.

My first free system is full of them. Zodiacal Spirit Bracelet works with twelve signs, three stones each, every meaning liftable from anywhere.

So what got made? An arrangement of material that was already identical everywhere, wrapped in a template that was also identical everywhere, produced at no cost to the maker. And a free self-attunement is most people's first attunement ever. Nobody starts with a paid system from a founder they have never heard of. They start here, at the thinnest tier the field has, and they decide from it whether any of this is worth an hour of their life.

The easy verdict is laziness and the easy verdict is wrong. Working inside a settled form is how most crafts operate most of the time. You find out what lands, you make more of what lands, and there is nothing dishonest in that. A founder who has found a shape people respond to and keeps working inside it is doing what a potter does. Comfort is not automatically a failure of nerve. Some of it is knowledge, and knowing what will be enjoyed is worth something real, and a field where everybody is always experimenting is a field where nothing gets deep. Settlement matters. I would rather read a good manual in a familiar shape than a bad one in a new shape.

The trouble is when the settlement goes all the way down. Borrowed shape, borrowed contents, borrowed reception page, and the only thing the founder brought to it was the decision to publish.

What is being valued here, from the maker's side?

If the answer is the energy, if the manual is only a wrapper around something that would work regardless, then none of this matters. The sameness is cosmetic. Nobody needs to try harder because trying was never where the thing lived. I understand the position. A lot of this field holds it without ever saying it out loud, and the entire free shelf is built as though it were true.

I don't hold it, and everything above has been an argument against it. If an attunement is the conditions somebody set, then the setting is the work. Borrowed conditions are borrowed work. A manual assembled out of what everyone already has is an attunement assembled out of what everyone already has.

And that turns the money question inside out. I had it backwards for years and I think the field has it backwards too. The question was never why so much of this is free. The question is what anyone could charge for it and mean it. Free may be an accurate price rather than a gift. Nobody sat down and decided that a rearrangement of public symbolism is worth nothing, and the arithmetic didn't have to decide it either. It simply is worth nothing, and giving it away is the only reasonable thing to do with it.

This is where the self-attunement stops being an awkward corner of the shelf and becomes the most honest object on it. In every other format there is somewhere to stand. A transmission you can point at. A session someone can feel. A certificate with a lineage on it. The self-attunement has none of those. Nobody sends, so there is no sending to credit. Nothing is felt arriving, so there is no arrival to praise. There is only what was made, and the reader is alone with it, and the founder's decisions are the whole of what they hold. That is its uniqueness, and it's the same thing as its problem. It is the one format where the making is all there is, which means it is the one format where the making can't hide.

So make the most of that. If you're receiving, read the manual as if you were about to pay for it, and ask it one question, whether somebody decided anything in here. Where the energy lands, what it's for, how it's entered, how it's left, why it's free or why it isn't. You can feel the difference between a page where a person chose this symbol over that one and a page where the template chose everything and the person filled in a name. Then go back to it a week later, which is the part nobody does and the part I skipped for two years. Don't repeat to fix. Repeat to find out. And if a manual gives you a door that closes, take that as the gift it is, because a founder who removed your second chance is the only kind who was betting you'd show up for the first.

If you're making one, the paid self-attunement is the object I keep coming back to, and nobody asked for it. It removes both hiding places. You can't point at the transmission, because there isn't one. You can't shrug and say it's free, because it isn't. Somebody hands you money and all they get is what you decided, so you had better have decided something. I've made three and I want to make more, for a reason that is almost embarrassing. It is the only format that asks me out loud what I think my work is worth.

The variation in this field all goes to one place. Thousands of energies. Thousands of names, colours, rays, guardians, flushes, activations, every one announced as new. The symbolism under them is copied. The reception page under that is copied. So the field produces enormous variety in the one layer where variety cannot be checked, and almost none in the two layers underneath, where it could be.

Part of that is trust. A manual that looks like the others reads as an attunement. A manual that asks you to scream at dawn has to earn belief twice. Part of it I can report from inside, because I did it. When I put out a paid self-attunement another teacher told me plainly what the risk was. People would feel they hadn't got what they paid for. No transmission, no session, no certificate, so what exactly is in the bag. Fair, and I expected it. The second cost I expected less. A system in an unfamiliar shape is harder to place on other people's sites, because whoever lists it has to explain a model they didn't invent, and explaining somebody else's unusual decision to a customer is unpaid work with no upside. That turned out partly true. Faced with something that needs explaining, the cheapest move is not to carry it. Which doesn't mean you can't make it. It means distribution prefers the familiar without ever saying so, and a founder learns that the safe place for strangeness is inside the energy, where nobody has to defend it, and that the packaging should be left alone.

The rest of it is undramatic. Those three sold well enough that I'd do it again, and nobody has yet written to me with the reaction I was warned about.

Which leaves the sharpest version, the one I like least. A new energy risks nothing, because a new energy cannot visibly fail. Nobody can prove it didn't arrive. A new format can be refused at the door. It can be laughed at, left half-done, written to the founder about, or never listed at all. So the experimenting goes where failure is invisible and stops where it isn't.

I'm not standing outside this. My first free system used the field's reception page and I felt safer for it, and I still know the pull toward making a manual look like a manual. Two people changing the door a few times over two years proves nothing except that the door can be changed.

What are any of us adding? Not for the reader. To the craft. If invention only ever goes into the layer nobody can check, a field can produce forever and evolve in nothing.

I can't tell from inside whether that is what's happening here. I can tell that the shelf looks exactly the way it would look if it were.

FAQ

If a founder channels an attunement that is transmitted, do they get self-attuned to it or not? What they end up holding is the system rather than an attunement to it, for the reason above, that nobody hands it to them. Some founders say the intention over their own finished work anyway, as a way of closing the desk, and the impulse makes sense to me. It formalizes what the building already did, the same way a self-attunement's sentence formalizes what its manual already did. Nothing stops them either. They set the sender condition, so it is theirs to hold or to waive.

Can I self-attune to a system that was meant to be transmitted, by intention alone? You can ask. What answers, in my opinion, is the part of you that already knew what to expect. If a founder set a sender as a condition, removing the sender changes what was set, and what you are building is a system of your own with a borrowed label on it.

Can I pass a self-attunement on to someone? You can pass the manual on, if the manual permits it, and that is all you would be passing. Nobody transmits a self-attunement, including you, so the person you hand it to receives exactly what you did. A shape, not a line.

Do I get a certificate or a lineage? No. There is no line to record you in. The self-attunements on this site say so plainly, and a free self-attunement offering you a certificate is offering you a document about a document.

Can I receive it for someone else, my partner, my mother? No. Nothing is being sent, so there is nothing to redirect. Give them the manual, with their agreement, and let them receive it themselves.

What if I did it wrong? Read the manual again first, because most wrong turns out to be a skipped page. If it still looks wrong and the manual allows a repeat, repeat as an experiment and not a retry. If it doesn't allow one, you didn't do it wrong. You did it once.

Why does J0Y close for good? So the second time can't be used to avoid the first.

Are you present in any way when someone receives one of yours? No. I was present once, for everyone at once, before any of you were there. Not even dancing.

Is it better than the chi ball? A rule I would defend, extending the last post's. Chi ball when the timing should serve your life, real time when you suspect your life has been serving your timing, self-attunement when the system was built to be entered alone, and only then, because most weren't.

The memorial stone is the inscription raised for Usui at Saihoji in 1927, in the translation by Hyakuten Inamoto. The mountain and the twenty-one days are on the stone. Nearly everything else people say about that episode is not.
